Want to help your favorite nonprofit but can’t afford to make a monetary donation? No worries: Making a Volunteer Pledge through Give Big Kern is an excellent way of giving back. Your time and skills are valuable. When applying for grants, nonprofits can report your volunteer hours as in-kind contributions toward their sustainability, strengthening their odds for funding. You’ll be helping more than you know!

Consider the following:

According to the California Association of Nonprofits...

  • A whopping 70% of California nonprofits are all-volunteer organizations. Only 30% of our state’s nonprofits have paid staff.
  • California volunteers contribute approximately $16.6 billion in unpaid labor each year. That’s the equivalent of more than 331,000 full-time jobs!
  • As of 2023, the value of a volunteer hour in California is $31.80?! That’s how much your volunteering is worth to a nonprofit in Kern County that needs your support!

And that, according to Independent Sector...

What’s your passion: people in general, children and youth, seniors, veterans, animals, nature, social justice, ending hunger and homelessness or domestic violence?

Choose a Give Big Kern participating nonprofit and complete a Volunteer Application online (between April 7 and May 7 to access and print a paper version of the form and turn it into the nonprofit you want to volunteer with.)

If you aren’t sure which agency you want to volunteer with, no problem, use the Give Big Kern website’s search functionality to “find your passion.” Search for a cause (veterans, animals, justice, etc.) using the search bar or the “View All” link on the home page to access an alphabetical listing of all participating nonprofits. So, what are you waiting for? Give BIG by volunteering!
