Hello everyone, and welcome to my Give Big Kern fundraising page for The Center!

The Center's mission is to provide affirming events, activities, and mental health support to youth, young adults, and adults so that they can thrive, advocate for themselves, and lead change in their communities.  For 14 years, we have provided free counseling services, life skills workshops, behavioral health training and cultural competency training to reduce isolation, build resiliency, and promote equality. We provide a safe space and a sense of community for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Kern County.

I’m honored to serve as a first-year board member for The Center, and I’m excited to be raising funds for this incredible organization through this year’s donations campaign. I’d love to share a bit about why this work means so much to me.

About nine months ago, I relocated to Bakersfield with my then-fiancé—now my husband—Danny. As we settled into our new home, we were both searching for a community space where we could truly be ourselves while also giving back. Having grown up in a community similar to Bakersfield and coming from the Palm Springs area, finding The Center was incredibly meaningful. Learning about the services, support, and sense of belonging it provides made it clear that this was the organization I wanted to be part of.

Like many LGBTQ+ individuals, I often reflect on my younger years and wish I had access to a space like The Center—one that fosters authenticity, acceptance, and connection. It took me years to fully embrace who I am, and while that journey hasn’t always been easy, it has led me to a place of pride, purpose, and community. Today, I’m grateful to give back in ways I once only hoped for.

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” — Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

Thank you so much for your support. Every dollar raised goes directly toward vital, community-based services that uplift and empower individuals of all ages.

With gratitude and love,
Brian
