Women's Center - High Desert Inc.

In 1978 the Women’s Center-High Desert, Inc. was started as a referral agency and organizer of ‘rap sessions’ which dealt with women’s issues. The work was done by a handful of dedicated volunteers that provided a variety of services to women, men and their families. There is approximately 2,600 square miles in East Kern County and we know we are making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

Our funding sources include federal and state funds as well as local support through the United Way of the Indian Wells Valley and Kern County, community service organizations, fundraisers and personal donations.

Through our Domestic Violence program during the year 2015, services were provided to 195 new victims and their children with safe shelter. A total of 5,665 safe bed nights were provided for those clients. Transitional shelter was provided for 49 clients. Clients were provided 195 emergency transportations.  206 adult clients received individual counseling for issues related to domestic violence amd sexual assault for a total of 1073 sessions. 22 children received counseling services for a total of 80 sessions. For clients with children under 6 years old, we provide assessments relating to their physical and emotional development. This is a tool provided by our First 5 grant.

The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) worked 87 cases and provided crisis intervention to 116 victims. In addition to crisis intervention, clients were also provided with follow up care, advocacy and court accompaniment.
