North of the River Recreation Foundation

Since 1955, the North of the River Recreation and Park District (NOR) has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents in North Bakersfield through diverse recreational programs and facilities. NOR was founded on a timeless concept - neighbors helping neighbors. NOR's roots began when the mothers of the community got together to find a way for their children to have a fun and safe place for recreation - a neighborhood swimming pool. Thanks to the energy and perseverance of those caring mothers, a Special District, was established. NOR remains committed to the tradition of making the community a better place to live. 

In 1992, the North of the River Recreation Foundation (Foundation) was formed to preserve the community's vitality and livability by raising private funds to enhance and expand our parks, recreation, and social services programs, as well as provide access and opportunity for all. All funds donated to the Foundation help support NOR initiatives, supporting the wider Bakersfield community.

During Give Big Kern, all donations directly support the Foundation's Youth Recreation Scholarship Fund, ensuring that those with financial barriers to access can participate in recreation programs with the District.
