Houchin Community Blood Bank

For 75 years, Houchin Community Blood Bank has been a lifeline for Kern County, powered by a community that continues to show up when it matters most. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the only independent blood provider serving all local hospitals, Houchin supports patients facing trauma, cancer treatments, surgeries, premature births, and chronic illness. Blood cannot be manufactured and has a limited shelf life, making every single donation critical. Because of local donors, lives are saved here every day.

Houchin is more than a blood bank, it’s a network of everyday heroes serving a growing population of more than 900,000 residents through three donor centers and a robust mobile program that brings blood drives directly into workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods. When the need is urgent, this community responds and that kind of compassion is what has sustained our mission for decades.

As we celebrate 75 years of dedicated service, we are focused on what comes next. The need for blood is constant and growing. To meet that demand, Houchin is expanding mobile collections, strengthening donor engagement, and investing in innovative advancements in blood services.
