She is a catering server, working at an event that focused on Pregnancy and Maternal Health. As she served, she listened to the presentation and yearning for the help they were discussing. After the event concluded, this young woman approached a member of the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center. "Are you a doctor?" she asked. "No, I work at the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center as the Executive Director. We are located in Bakersfield." "Do you need insurance?" The young woman asked. "No, all our services are free". I replied. Then she replied excitedly "Oh, I am pregnant! I don't know where to go, I don't know how to get into a doctor or care." With compassion, I responded "That is exactly what we are here for, please come to the center tomorrow and let's get your services started."
When an unplanned pregnancy suddenly becomes part of your story, it can be overwhelming to know how to find care, where to start, who can help. At the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center, we have served over 45,000 clients since 1985 with compassion, help and hope. All of our services are free, confidential and respectful.
The Bakersfield Pregnancy Center provides free pregnancy testing, free STI testing and limited treatment, limited OB ultrasounds at any gestational age as deemed appropriate by our registered nurses, personal advocates for each client, parenting classes, fatherhood coaching and abundant material assistance. Each service is offered free of charge, no insurance needed, given with compassion, tangible help and the hope of our faith-based ministry.
We are here to help you in that moment of decision. You are not alone.
"I felt like I could just say how I felt. No criticism or judgement. I felt like I mattered." A review quote from a client.
The Bakersfield Pregnancy Center exists to provide free and confidential services to men and women with pregnancy related needs, including pregnancy verifications, ultrasounds, parenting classes, baby showers, post-abortion and miscarriage support, and material assistance.
In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic hit our non-profit organization in a big way. We had to suspend parenting classes and say goodbye temporarily to our volunteers. We made adjustments to our office hours and began practicing social distancing and wearing face masks, making our conversations with our often times distraught and hurting clients more challenging than ever before.
Yet with all the changes made and amidst the chaos we fought hard to tame, one thing remained unchanged-the need for the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center to remain open. Not for one day did we close our doors to our clients from the inception of the stay-at-home order until the end of December, because we determined to practice the protocols that were mandated by the State, but also because of the determination of our Board of Directors and medical staff that wanted to make sure our clients still had a clinic they could go to for a pregnancy test, ultrasound, advocacy, help, and hope. Some hospitals and clinics turned women with pregnancy concerns away so the need for our doors to remain open truly continued to manifest itself as true.
We pride ourselves in making a difference in the lives of the Kern County community by offering free and confidential services to all women experiencing pregnancy related problems or concerns in the office of our downtown location as well as in the outlying areas by using our ICU mobile unit. Will you help us this year to continue thriving, offering hope, and providing free medical and emotional help to the men and women in Kern County?
