There are over 2,000 children and youth experiencing foster care in Kern County--the statistics tell them their future is bleak.

• 50% of foster youth will obtain a high school diploma.
• Only 3% will graduate college.
• 1 out of 5 foster youth become homeless at age 18.
• Only 50% will be employed at the age of 24.
  

But we believe it doesn't have to be this way. Our programs empower volunteers to walk alongside these vulnerable children and youth to change the outcomes.

Below is a Q&A with one of the youth in our programs:

What do you wish people knew about foster care?

"Foster care is difficult. A lot of the time you have no one but yourself to look out for you. In many cases, it matures kids faster and makes them seem a lot older. Don’t hold onto that idea. Kids in foster care need to remember that we’re still children or young adults, and that the weight of the world isn’t our fault. The adults that take care of us need to know that too."

How has being matched with a mentor impacted your life?

"I have someone to just chill with and talk to, I haven’t had that in a long time, admittedly. It’s changed my life in a complete 180. I’m doing better now today than I ever have."

Who We Are

Bakersfield Angels exists to to walk alongside children, youth, and families in the foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship.
