Fwd Dynamics

FWD: Dynamics is dedicated to providing students in Kern County with access to technology and accelerated career development opportunities. Our initiatives focus on distributing surplus computers to students in need and providing a conducive real-world learning environment for students to jumpstart their careers while completing their studies. 

We have two main initiatives, KernelWorks and Off and On Again. 

KernelWorks

KernelWorks is FWD Dynamics’ flagship internship and career readiness program - a bold initiative where students transform into professionals by doing real work, on real projects, with real stakes, all while still in school.

Hosted in Bakersfield, California, and drawing talent primarily from CSU Bakersfield and nearby community colleges, KernelWorks provides hands-on, mentored experience in software development, project management, AI integration, and workplace professionalism.

Unlike traditional internships, KernelWorks doesn’t wait for students to be “ready”. We make them ready. Participants work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment that mirrors the real tech industry without the cutthroat “sink or swim” culture. They gain not only technical expertise but also the soft skills, business acumen, and customer-focused mindset needed to thrive in any workplace. 

Off and On Again

Off and On Again is FWD Dynamics’ student-powered technology renewal program turning yesterday’s computers into tomorrow’s opportunities. We partner with local companies to reclaim decommissioned devices, securely wipe all data, and give them a second life in the hands of students who need them most across Kern County. 

Through this circular economy initiative, student interns gain real-world experience in IT asset disposition (ITAD), system repair, and industry-recognized certifications. Businesses, in turn, get a secure, sustainable way to reduce e-waste while directly investing in the next generation of talent.
