Give Big Kern Feature Story: AAA Dog Rescue — Giving Kern County’s Abandoned Dogs a Second Chance

For 13 years, Sonya Nonini has dedicated her life to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Kern County’s abandoned and neglected dogs. She works day and night with the animals, addressing behavioral challenges, nursing the sick and injured back to health, and providing the love and guidance each dog needs to thrive. But her work doesn’t stop with the dogs—Sonya also teaches and supports adopters, helping families understand their pets’ behaviors and needs so every adoption is a lasting success.

When faced with 29 dogs depending on her care and no financial or organizational support, Sonya refused to walk away. Alongside co-founder Pam Quattlebaum, and our Board of Directors she built AAA Dog Rescue on one simple principle: if no one else will help them, we will. Together, they committed to giving Kern County’s abandoned and neglected dogs a second chance at life.

A Year of Impact

Over the past year, AAA Dog Rescue has:

  • Cared for over 70 animals, including vulnerable puppies with their mothers and dogs in urgent medical need
  • Found loving forever homes for more than 40 dogs throughout California
  • Participated in major community adoption efforts, including Kern County’s Mega Adoptions events
  • Provided surgeries, rehabilitation, and hands-on care for sick and injured animals

These aren’t just numbers—they are lives saved and transformed.

Honoring a Legacy: The Charles Wilson Community Fund

This year, AAA Dog Rescue is raising funds to create a special community fund in memory of Charles Wilson, one of our first supporters and a steadfast believer in our mission. The fund will provide veterinary care for community members in need, helping pets stay healthy and in their homes rather than being abandoned due to financial hardship. Donating to this fund is a way to honor Charles’ legacy while directly helping animals and families in Kern County.

What Makes AAA Dog Rescue Different

AAA Dog Rescue isn’t just another rescue. We treat rescue as a mission, not a competition, focusing on quality over quantity. From senior dogs requiring specialized medical attention to puppies and mothers needing nurturing, our team invests time, resources, and heart to give each animal their best chance. We don’t just adopt dogs out—we teach families to understand their pets, ensuring every adoption succeeds. Every dog leaves knowing they are loved, supported, and set up to thrive.

Our Team and Community

Alongside Sonya and Pam, a committed team of fosters, volunteers, and supporters provide temporary homes, hands-on care, and essential support. Partnerships with veterinarians, other rescues, and local organizations expand our reach and effectiveness. Together, this team transforms lives—both animal and human—every single day.

We support our fosters ( many have fostered for other rescues ) . We provide food , treats, preventative medicine, medicine training because we realize they don’t have to do this but because of their huge hearts we always hope they choose us to foster for. We have had a few foster failures but because we know our foster families so well- we are thrilled we they adopt because we know how lucky our dogs are to be with them. And when former adopters even those that adopted from other rescues seek Sonya out when they are ready to add to their family . We couldn’t be happier or more proud for them to be part of AAA Dog Rescue . If you’ve adopted from AAA Dog Rescue and you can’t keep that dog  for any reason. We always stand behind our AAA dogs. We offer training or services and resources for our adopters and of there is problem that prevents and adopter from Keeping the dog, we step in and standby by the dogs . You will never hear that we don’t remember the dog and it’s your problem. You will alway be part of our AAA Family
